Department of History
Established in 1966, the Department of History at Catholicate College, Pathanamthitta is one of the institution’s most vibrant academic centres, offering both B.A. and M.A. programmes. Over the decades, the department has played a significant role in shaping the intellectual and cultural landscape of Central Kerala.
The department has a distinguished record of academic excellence, with students consistently securing top ranks at the university level. To date, ––– batches of graduates and ––– batches of postgraduates have completed their studies, many of whom have gone on to excel as teachers, researchers, administrators, statesmen, and professionals.
Research and Academic Excellence
The Department of History also functions as an active Research Department, nurturing a strong scholarly culture and promoting advanced research in various domains of history, culture, archaeology, and the social sciences. The department has published ––– research papers in international journals, completed four Minor Research Projects, and currently has one ongoing project.
In addition, the department collaborates with external institutions and heritage agencies. It is actively associated with the excavation project at Chilanthiambalam, Kodumon, contributing valuable insights to regional archaeology and heritage studies.
Infrastructure and Student Support
The department is equipped with a modern audio-visual conference hall featuring full digital facilities, supporting lectures, seminars, and interactive learning.
It also maintains a well-curated departmental library and reading room, housing a rich collection of rare and out-of-print books, making it a valuable resource for students and researchers.
Department Museum
The Department of History proudly maintains a well-organized and academically enriching museum, showcasing historical artefacts, cultural objects, and educational displays. The museum serves as an important teaching aid, offering students hands-on exposure to material history and supporting research in archaeology, culture, and heritage studies.
Outreach and Extension Activities
Beyond the university curriculum, the department actively organizes extension programmes, invited lectures, workshops, and community-oriented academic activities that enhance historical awareness and public engagement.
Faculty Strength
The department currently has a dedicated and dynamic team of seven permanent faculty members, committed to high-quality teaching, mentoring, and research.
With a vibrant academic environment and a student community of around 149 learners, the Department of History continues to uphold its legacy of academic distinction, research excellence, cultural preservation, and community engagement.
