With a rich legacy of almost six decades, the PG Department of English has garnered several accolades and have made dazzling achievements and accomplishments .The Department of English was established with the UG Programme in 1964 and PG Programme in 1998. Five Year Integrated MA Programme in Languages – English, a new generation course was introduced in 2021 and it has been designed to strengthen the understanding and to broaden the horizon of the students with respect to literatures across the world and also to develop a knowledge base that cuts across disciplines. BA English Honours Programme with specialization in Film Studies & Cultural Studies commenced from the academic year 2024-25.Ever since its inception, the department has made substantial contribution to the overall growth and reputation of the college by consistently producing good academic results.

A Skill Development Programme under Ministry of Education, Government of India and GAD TLC was conducted by the Department of English, as a collaborative venture with Bishop More College, Mavelikkara, St. John’s College, Agra, Sacred Heart College, Chalakudy, St. Joseph’s College, Alapuzha, Assumption College, Changanacherry, and St. Joseph’s College, Irinjalakuda for final year Degree students. The course offers 45 hours of Experiential Learning  in order to enable the students to succeed in today’s competitive world by equipping them with effective communication, negotiation, presentation skills and  interview skills as well as self-management, problem solving, entrepreneurial, teamwork and  technology based skills.

An Add on/Certificate Course  titled Certificate in Creative Writing and Translation is framed as an Add-on programme as per UGC and NAAC directives. Students of the Graduate and Postgraduate (English) programme will be eligible for admission and the 30 hours of learning is provided in the online mode.. This course is designed to equip the students in the art of writing and make them able to reflect critically on the processes of writing and translation.

The department caters to the needs of aspiring students by providing coaching for competitive examinations like NTA NET Exam & UPSC Civil Services Exam. English Civil Services Club in the department functions with an aim to guide and inspire our students to come out with flying colours in this competitive world.The department has a wide variety of research interests and thrust areas: British Literature, Indian Writing in English, Novel and Narratology, Comparative Literature, Romantic Poetry, Post-colonial Studies, Linguistics and Stylistics, Feminism, Eco-Aesthetic Study of Literature, Women and Literature, Cultural Studies, Women's Studies, Film Studies, Gender Studies, Dalit Literature, Tribal Studies and English Language Teaching(ELT).

The English department plans to continue with its intensive research interests alongside its regular teaching as well as to maintain, and if possible, expand areas for seminars/conferences.
