The Department is one of the oldest in the College . It offers Syriac as a second language for the various degree courses. The department offers a certificate course in Syriac for those who are interested in the semetic family of languages in and outside the college. The Department also serves as a centre of guidance for higher studies in Syriac. The Department has instituted an academic chair to commemorate Pulikottil Mar Dionyasius V, Malankara Metropolitan.

The Department Of Syriac plans to continue with its intensive research interests alongside its regular teaching as well as to maintain, and if possible, expand areas for seminars/conferences.

Pulikottil Mar Dionysius Chair was inaugurated by Dr.Sven Agusta of George August University. Late lamented Pulikkottil Mar Dionysius V was a great revolutionist in the field of education. He was the Malankara Metropolitan of Malankara Orthodox Church. He started about 200 English schools in Kerala to spread English education among Keralites in the early 19 th century. To commemorate the valuable contribution in the saint this chair was instituted. Dr. Richada also participated. Dr. Fr. Reji Mathew of Den, Orthodox theological seminary, Kottayam made the keynote address. Dr. Alexander Karakkal adorned the chair. The chair aims at the speeding the awareness about the oriental churches, to conduct debates on topics of relevant social problems and to promote international inter-church dialogue.
