With a legacy of more than six decades, the PG Department of English has garnered several accolades and made dazzling achievements and accomplishments. The Department of English was established with the UG Programme in 1964 and the PG Programme in 1998. Five Year Integrated MA Programme in Languages – English, a new generation course was introduced in 2021 and it has been designed to strengthen the understanding and to broaden the horizon of the students with respect to literatures across the world and also to develop a knowledge base that cuts across disciplines. BA English Honours Programme with specialization in Film Studies & Cultural Studies commenced from the academic year 2024-25.Ever since its inception, the department has made a substantial contribution to the overall growth and reputation of the college by consistently producing good academic results. A Certificate Course titled Certificate Course in Communication Skills is framed by the department to equip students in developing better communication skills. Students of the Graduate and Postgraduate (English) programme will be eligible for admission and the 30 hours of learning is provided in both offline and online mode. The department caters to the needs of aspiring students by providing coaching for competitive examinations & for UPSC Civil Services Exam. The English Civil Services Club in the department functions with an aim to guide and inspire our students to come out with flying colours in this competitive world.The department has a wide variety of research interests and thrust areas: British Literature, Indian Writing in English, Novel and Narratology, Comparative Literature, Romantic Poetry, Post-colonial Studies, Linguistics and Stylistics, Feminism, Eco-Aesthetic Study of Literature, Women and Literature, Cultural Studies, Women's Studies, Film Studies, Gender Studies, Dalit Literature, Tribal Studies and English Language Teaching(ELT).

The English department plans to continue with its intensive research interests alongside its regular teaching and wishes to organize more seminars and conferences.
