   Department of Physics

The department was established with a Degree course in the year 1960. The department offers two PG courses in Physics with a specialization in Electronics and Material Science. The department was approved as Research Centre in the year 2009. The department also runs a UGC-sponsored Add-on course in ‘Computer technology The department maintains a library with 1900 books and 14 journals in Physics. The department is carrying out three major projects. Faculty members and students of the department have published 100 research papers in international and national journals during the last five years. The thrust areas of research are Photonics, Nanomaterials, Nanocolloids, Crystal growth, Thin films, Atmospheric Science and Statistical Physics. The department has a student chapter in collaboration with SPIE (USA). In the last five years, the department has hosted ten national seminars and 3 International seminars. The department has been conducting an outreach programme in association with the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS - ISRO).

Current year, the department took initiative in conducting a two-week interdisciplinary online faculty development programme on “Structural Analysis Using Rietveld Refinement, Microscopic and Compositional Analysis”, in association with Guru Angad Dev teaching learning centre, Ministry of Education Govt. of India and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT). Department organized two Certificate Courses on “Entrepreneurship in LED Lighting Business” and “Python for Data Science” in association with Guru Angad Dev teaching learning centre, Ministry of Education Govt. of India and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT). Department conducted “Scholar hub programme” in association with CMS college Kottayam for promoting degree and P.G level students to interact with eminent scholars and explore innovative ideas in academics and research. Department faculty, Asst Prof. Sajith Babu S, secured Best NSS Program Officer Award-M.G. University for the year 2020-2021. Suryajith S.M of I-MSc. Physics (Electronics) got IIT-JAM Examination 2022. Anju Elizabeth Yohannan of I-MSc. Physics (Material Science) Chief Minister's Student Merit Award 2022. Anu M.A Second MSc. Physics (Electronics) got ASPIRE fellowship for doing Internship. Jeusha Ann John (III BSc. Physics) secured INSPIRE fellowship. Devu Vinod (III BSc. Physics) secured higher education scholarship. Gouri Sankar B, Sidharth Vinod, and Samutha Nair of III BSc. Physics selected for the Kerala University Business Innovation and Incubation Centre [KUBHC] fly from lab to society idea grant. Devika R.S of II MSc. Physics (Material Science) selected for 10th IIST Astronomy and Astrophysics School 2021 conducted by IIST, Thiruvananthapuram. Anu M.A of II MSc. Physics (Electronics) selected for Physics Training and Talent Search (PTTS-2021) hosted by Ahmedabad University, Gujarath. M. Thomas I MSc. Physics (Electronics) have been selected for a project under the KTPI  Active Research Training Program. Asiya Shafeek, Annie M Shaji and Abey George from first MSc. Physics got selection for attending Summer School on Astronomy and Astrophysics  conducted by IUCCA Pune.
