The department was established with a Degree course in the year 1960. The department offers two PG courses in Physics with a specialization in Electronics and Material Science. The department was approved as Research Centre in the year 2009. The department also runs a UGC-sponsored Add-on course in ‘Computer technology The department maintains a library with 1900 books and 14 journals in Physics. The department is carrying out three major projects. Faculty members and students of the department have published 100 research papers in international and national journals during the last five years. The thrust areas of research are Photonics, Nanomaterials, Nanocolloids, Crystal growth, Thin films, Atmospheric Science and Statistical Physics. The department has a student chapter in collaboration with SPIE (USA). In the last five years, the department has hosted ten national seminars and 3 International seminars. The department has been conducting an outreach programme in association with the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (ISRO). Poornima Jayakumar, Amritha Krishnan and Sreelakshmi Prasad Pillai secured first, second and third rank
respectively in M.Sc Physics (Material Science) during the academic year 2019-20. Ayana Jose secured the eighth rank in M.Sc. Physics (Electronics). Department has an MoU with NCESS under the Ministry of Earth Science in the National lighting Network Research Programme. Current year, the department took initiative in conducting a two-week interdisciplinary online faculty development programme and two certificate programmes in association with Guru Angad Dev teaching learning centre, Ministry of Education Govt. of India and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT). Department conducted “Scholar hub programme” in association with CMS College Kottayam. Department faculty, Asst Prof. Sajith Babu S, secured the Best NSS Program Officer Award-M.G. University for the year 2020-2021.
