Established in 1952 Catholicate College Pathanamthitta remains to be the most important centre of Higher Learning in Central Tranvancore. It has been able to make proud and credible contributions in the social, cultural and educational fields.
The Department of Malayalam was started in the college in 1957. The Post Graduate Course in 1965.The M.G. University recognized the Department as a research centre in1986.
There had been a galaxy of eminent teachers who served the Dept. It includes a number of famous poets, critics and other literary figures.
The Department is composed of ten (10+1-for self financing B com) teachers. Among them 5 of them hold Doctoral Degrees. 2, M.Phil. Degrees and four are pursuing research leading to PhD.
This year the Department of Malayalam was selected as the Course work Centre in Malayalam of Mahatma Gandhi University for PhD courses. 4 Research students have been joined in this centre for course work.
The teaching methods generally accepted are lecture method. The classroom teaching is live with discussions and teacher student interaction and also we practice ICT, Group discussion and peer teaching. Selected students from the peer group are deputed to teach selected subjects in UG and PG classes. Above all for slow learners we arrange remedial classes along with continues evaluation so as to pass the examinations.
PLACEMENT ALUMNI The Dept. of Malayalam has an effectively functioning Alumina. We arrange meeting occasionally. Annual Alumni meeting was conducted on Nov 14, 2015. 100 former students have participated in the function and Dr Jose Parakkadavil inaugurated the meeting. Cultural Programmes and family get together was also conducted along with the alumni meeting. Many of our former students were placed in reputed positions. Many of our students were placed in leading visual as well as in printed media in Kerala. Four students were placed as teachers in College, Schools and in primary education. Also many were placed in Kerala Government offices as well as in private sector.

The Malayalam association is active organization presenting various academic and non-academic activities. It works under the patronage of the HOD. It is this association which provides the necessary leadership for the artistic, cultural and academic activities. The association has been able to provide the Dept. of Malayalam with a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction through significant and notable contributions. A detailed report of activities is prepared in separate file. The association has conducted varieties of cultural Programmes and academic discussions. During this year we have conducted Association Inaugrated by Unnikrishnan Poozhikkaadu(Short story writer) & One day Seminar on Contemporary Trends in Malayalam Poetry by Dr. BC Rajesh(Poet) .
