The Department of Physics is making unique strides in all the aspects of higher education from infrastructure to teaching, research and meeting the aspirations of our learners. The department was established in the year 1960 with Degree course. Department offers two P.G course in Physics with specialization in Material Science and Electronics. The up gradation of the department as Research Centre is a recognition for its significant contribution in the fields of teaching and research. The department also owns a UGC sponsored Add-on course in 'Computer technology'.
To advance knowledge and learning through Quality Research and Education for the Nation and the Humanity.
OBJECTIVES/GOALS
Commencement of the first Post Graduate course was on 1968. M.Sc. Physics with specialization in Material science was started in 1999.The department has been approved as a research centre in 2009. Highly qualified and dedicated faculty, well-stocked library, state-of-the art laboratories and networked computer Lab with Internet connection. We had an array of eminent persons in the teaching faculty who helped the department to accomplish the current status. The department maintains a departmental library. It has 2017 books in Physics. The central library has a collection of 6000 books in Physics. The library also subscribes to 14 journals.
It will strive hard to promote inter-disciplinary/multi-disciplinary research, industry oriented research. Teachers are actively involved in research activities and give proper guidance and promote the students in research activities. Two students submitted Ph.D thesis and two students are doing their Ph.D. under this department. Students from various colleges and other departments are also doing their M.Sc. dissertation under this department. Several research papers were published by faculty members and students in international and national journals. Faculty members and students also presented papers in international and national conferences. The thrust areas are Photonics, Nanomaterilas, Nano colloids, Crystal growth, Thin films, Atmospheric Science and Statistical Physics. The department has collaboration for research with the following institutes: ISRO, Raman Research Institute (RRI), International school of Photonics (ISP) CUSAT, SPAP M.G.University, RRLTrivandrum. The department is equipped with computer, UG and PG laboratories. Department hosted two national seminars, one workshop on basic electronics, Science Expo 2014, Prof. N G Kunjachen Memorial Lecture, Chandra Din Celebration, A one day seminar on ‘’Research methodology in Physics and Astronomy, UGC Sponsored National Seminar On Optics And Optoelectronic Devices, Curie Day Celebration, Science day 2016 celebration and various science activities for the last two years.
