Catholicate College Pathanamthitta occupies a unique place in the educational map of Central Kerala. The Department of History contributes very much to the upkeep of a vibrant intellectual atmosphere on the college campus. The department with both B.A and M.A programmes were started in 1966. Students of this department have secured many ranks in the university level in consecutive years since its inception. Altogether –batches of Graduates and --- batches of Post-Graduates have passed out from the Department with flying colours. Many of them have attained acclaim as talented teachers, erudite researchers, gifted administrators and statesmen and meritorious professionals. The department published ---- papers in the international journals and completed four Minor Research Projects and one ongoing Project. At present the department has six permanent faculty members and about 149 students.
Besides the academic courses prescribed by the university the department has frequently organizing extension programmes and invited lectures and also associated with the excavation project at Chilanthiambalam in Kodumon. The Department possessed an audio visual conference hall with digital facilities, a library and a reading room inclusive of rare books presently out of print.

Alumni meet was conducted on 9th jan 2009.Fifty five Alumni members were present. Dr.George Joseph addressed the meeting.
A Counseling programme was conducted on De - addiction by Fr.Johns Abraham TRADA, Manganam, Kottayam on 30th Nov 2009. A counseling class on career guidance was conducted for IIIDC students by ICFAI on 25 Oct 2007.
‘Top scores meet’ was conducted on 2006, Ansu R.- M A. Ist Rank & Unnikrishnan G - BA IInd Rank were given award of honors. The chief guest of the day was Prof P.K.Kurien
Pulikottil Mar Dionysius Chair was inaugurated by Dr.Sven Agusta of George August Uiversity Gittingen. This is an interdisciplinary chair between History and Syriac. Various academic activities initiated by H.G. Mar Dionysius was remembered. He had started 200 English schools in Kerala in the early 19th century. He was instrumental in spreading English education throughout Kerala at that time. Student Project works funded by the department, in connection with the cultural renaissance was evaluated. Seminars, workshops, symposia were arranged under the auspices of the chair. A Proceeding will be published at the end of the year. Dr.Richada also participated. Dr Fr.Reji Mathew of dean of studies, Orthodox theological seminary made the key note address. Dr.alexander Karakkal adorned the chair. Dr. Sven delivered a talk on‘inter-religious dialogue ‘
Sibi Abraham Varghese of III DC History secured 2nd rank in BA Degree Examination and Anuja M Kurup secured 3rd rank of MA Degree Examination of M.G University. Congratulations to the achievers. The Department honoured them with mementoes.
