The department of Economics was established in 1955. The department offers an undergraduate programme in Economics. The department has been making steady and spectacular results over the years. At the UG level, it has created more than 3000 graduates through 57 batches and many of them are occupying important positions in social life. The department proposes to start PG course subject to the approval of Government. The department bagged third rank in BA in 2008.

The Department of Economics is one among the oldest departments of the Institution. The Department was established in 1955 as an undergraduate department, turned into a postgraduate department in 2020 by the sanctioning of a new generation course,MA Econometrics.The department proposes to start Research centre subject to the approval of MG University. At the UG level it has created more than 3900 students through 66 batches. During last 66 years, the Department has carved out a niche in the arena of Economics and many of its alumni have distinguished themselves in both academic and administrative spheres in national and international level.The department has been making steady and spectacular results over the years. Our students always done us proud by maintaining a consistent record of high academic performance at the University level, including University ranks.Sreelekshmi P Kumar bagged first rank (2019) and Ajil R Babu bagged 3rd Rank (2006) in MG University. Athira P Nair(2021) & Vaisakh Suresh( 2021) secured 4th and 7th position respectively. The department has conducted various regional seminars.And also UGC sponsored National Seminar on the topic “Inclusive Growth: The Unfinished Agenda "in 2015 and a National seminar on the topic “Emerging fiscal and monetary scenario: Indian Economy at crossroads in 2022".
Paper Publications
The Department has 3 permanent faculty members including 2 research guides in MG University.And 3 teachers are serving as guest faculties. Faculty members are active in teaching, research and community extension activities.They have published papers in 11 international journals ,7 National journals and one chapter in an edited book.Among these publications 3 are in UGC- CARE journals.At present 6 scholars are pursuing research leading to Ph.D under the guidance of research guides in the department. The department has completed one UGC sponsored minor project. The Department has conducted an extension activity ,Financial Literacy Phase I and Financial Literacy Phase II is going on .
Under the initiative of Economics Association the department has coordinated various discussions and co-curricular activities,including observance of national & international day ,budget analysis and interdepartmental - intercollegiate competitions.The department has a well maintained library.The department undertakes various charity programs and community extension activities.The department has an active Alumni Association and a Parent Teacher Association.All the stakeholders take keen initiative in the various activities of the department.Dr.K N Harilal ( Professor ,Centre for Development Studies and Former Member ,State Planning Board) and Shri.Robin Peter ( Member , District Panchayath, Pathanamthitta)are prestigious Alumni of department.
