The Department of Economics came into being in 1955 as one of the elegant oldest departments of Catholicate College, Pathanamthitta under Kerala University. Professor Mathen Panicker was its first head. The department has so far produced 67 batches of B.A. (Economics) graduates. Now, it is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala. The department was elevated to postgraduate status in 2020 with the introduction of M.A. (Econometrics). The course structure provides internship opportunities at various centers of eminence, exposure to minor project and dissertation. The course also trains students in application of R, Gretl and python softwares. Recently, the department is elevated as a Research Centre in Economics. Well stocked library, regional and national seminars and workshops are key highlights of the department. The department contributes a strong participation in inter collegiate and intra collegiate competitions; having its own department choir, debate club, reading club etc, the students are encouraged to enrich their own personality focusing on social- emotional- intellectual and psychological spheres
