The Department of Physics was established in 1960 with the introduction of an undergraduate degree program. Currently, it offers two postgraduate programs in physics, specializing in Electronics and Materials Science. In 2009, the department was recognized as a Research Centre. Additionally, it runs a UGC-sponsored Add-on course in Computer Technology. The department houses a dedicated library comprising over 1,900 books and 14 journals in the field of Physics. Over the past five years, the faculty and students have published more than 50 research papers in national and international journals. Faculty members have also secured several major and minor research projects from various funding agencies The department’s key research areas include, Nanomaterials, Nanocolloids, Thin Films, Atmospheric Science, and Statistical Physics. A student chapter was established in collaboration with SPIE (USA), fostering global academic interaction. In the last five years, the department has organized ten national seminars and three international seminars. It actively participates in outreach initiatives, including a collaborative program with the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS-ISRO). One notable initiative is the Scholar Hub Programme, conducted in association with CMS College Kottayam, which aims to promote academic and research engagement among undergraduate and postgraduate students through interactions with eminent scholars.
During the academic year 2025–26, the department made notable progress in both academic and co-curricular activities. Students secured top university ranks in the B.Sc. and M.Sc. Physics examinations. Academic collaborations were strengthened through new memoranda of understanding with various institutions. The department also introduced new Add-on courses in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Graphic Design, and Advertising. Community outreach efforts included hands-on workshops on assembling and maintaining LED lamps. The department organized several academic events, such as Moon Day, which featured expert lectures and quiz competitions. It also hosted an ISRO-supported space exhibition and promoted student innovation through various platforms. Other important activities included an Orientation Programme for the Skill Enhancement course and events marking the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.
These initiatives highlight the department’s commitment to academic excellence, community participation, and nurturing innovation-focused professional growth.
